Supplies:

• 1 large sheet of paper
• Various colorful cereals, circles, puffs, doesn’t matter.
• glue
• pencil.

Draw a picture or have kids draw a picture of anything, tree, house, people, sun, water, etc.

Glue in blank spots with cereal.

That’s it! You’re done.  Be sure to take lots of pictures of it, because this is one piece of art you might not want to keep- especially if you have bugs.

Supplies:

• black construction paper
• glitter glue (or regular glue and glitter)
• Q-tips

Let kids pour glue on paper and let them draw patterns and pictures with their Q-tips. Allow to dry for 1 hour, hang on refrigerator and there you have it- an easy, pretty work of art!

Supplies:

• colorful pompoms
• Google eyes
• sparkle-y jewel or sequin
• glue

Glue 2 pompoms together, push together. Add eyes and jewel, let dry and voila- there’s your bug!

Materials needed:

• paper- we use unlined composition notebooks for our artwork, because it’s easy to keep everything together.
• kids watercolor set
• light colored crayons like white, yellow or light green.

Step 1:

Have your kid(s) draw pictures on paper with crayons.

Step 2:

Let them paint over the crayon wax and watch their pictures pop!

Materials needed:

Old magazines

Scissors

Glue

Ziplock bag to hold magazine clippings

Appropriate ages:

18 months-3

Cut out all color pictures a day or two before you begin these lessons. It is best to do this project after reading a book together, going on a color walk, or playing a game like Candyland. For younger children, have them position pictures on the pages after you glue the backs.

Step 1:

Have your kids glue the appropriate colored pictures to the pages. Trace a handprint of the same color on the opposite page and let dry. Repeat every day until all pictures are used.

Voila! Pretty, much cheaper than buying a book of colors from the store, and your little one(s) will look forward to doing this with you everyday.

I dub it hippy art because, well, you’ll see.

Materials Needed:

• Watercolor paint. I used tubes of watercolors- you can buy some here:
• 1 Plastic sheet protector. Cut to preferred size.
• String or Yarn
• Hole puncher
• Scissors

Appropriate Ages:

3+

Step 1:

Cut plastic sheet protector. Do NOT separate, cut or split the plastic. Leave intact. I cut ours in fourths.

Step 2:

Squirt colors between plastic sheet protectors and allow kids to ‘push’ the colors in different directions.

Step 3:

Set out on flat surface to dry overnight. I placed ours outside in the sun and checked it the next day:

Step 4:

Cut into desired shape, add string and hang finished product in window.

The hardest part of this lesson is the wait.

Kids learn science because of color mixing, and by watching the sun shine through the paint while it hangs from your window. But to me, the best part about this lesson is, easy cleanup because there is very little mess. Have fun!

Step 1: precut hearts, and rectangular shapes for the cards. Use different shapes and sizes for unique cards. I cut thin strips for ‘pop up’ hearts with huggy arms. Fold them accordion style and get creative!

Step 2: Let your kids assemble them the way they want, but try and encourage them to pick contrasting colors for better visual appearance.

Completed project: Add eyeballs, draw faces and stamp messages inside the card, use fancy scissors to scallop edges and give them away to your loved ones! This is definitely something they will cherish forever!

First it was Thomas trains, then Mattel, now curious george? It makes me wonder about ALL the toys in our household- especially the wooden blocks and the thousands and thousands of hotwheels…

1. Color hunts. Take them outside and have them find one new color a day. you’d be surprised how fast they retain info when they are actively participating.
2. Make a ‘color’ book. Instructions on the way!
3. Give them a one colored snack. Ex: Red apples for red day, star fruits for yellow day, etc.
4. Give them a variety of one colored art supplies and materials: all green markers, crayons, non-toxic oil pastels and paint- even grass and play-doh/ clay make good media!
5. Read them stories relating to specific colors or all colors. I recommend:

Of course, you can do this lesson in different languages too. For instance, my gigglebabies already knew their colors in english, so I taught them in Hawaiian.

We made these after a 10 day lesson:

Materials used:

Used paper towel tube (obviously.)
non-bleed crepe paper in all colors
elmers glue

Wrap colors around the paper towel tube and glue streamers on the inside. My gigglebabies did their own and it got VERY STICKY so be prepared! And as always, have fun with this!

I have to warn you that it’s not an easy-breezy craft,and because a hot glue gun is involved, you will do most of it, but it’s soooo worth it in the end! See for yourself:

materials used:

• wood birdhouses (bought at wal-mart for about $2.50 ea.)
• brown and white acrylic paint
• pretties e.g. buttons, beads, ricrac trim, whatever looks edible *but isn’t*- unless of course you want to attract rodents and cockroaches and ants. If you do then by all means go for it with the skittles!
• mini birds. Ours came 2 to a pkg which was perfect for us!
• hot glue gun (I know you’re probably a good parent and all but I just have to write this: keep hot glue gun AWAY from the kids!!!)

Steps:

1. paint houses & let dry outside for an hour
2. gather your pretties and glue them on like candies

That’s it! The hardest part is waiting for the paint to dry.

Lesson idea!

I did these with my gigglebabies ages 7 mos- she painted! Hey, it’s non-toxic, okay? to 8 years.

The 2 gigglemiddles learned how to make simple and complex patterns and the older one learned how to make textures with paint.

I gave the gigglemiddles buttons and had them sort them by color. Then we did AB patterns, transitioned to ABC patterns and then ABB and AAB patterns. I then had each of them choose a pattern for their house and I glued it on for them.

The paint texturing lesson for the older giggler is pretty self-explanatory: lots of paint and different brush strokes create different looks.
